What is Reflexology?

Whilst the art of Reflexology dates back to Ancient Egypt, India and China, it wasn't until 1913 when Doctor William Fitzgerald introduced this therapy to the West as 'Zone Therapy'. He noted that reflex areas on the feet and hands were linked to other areas and organs of the body within the same zone.

In the 1930's Eunice Ingham further developed this zone therapy into what is now known as Reflexology. She observed that congestion or tension in any part of the foot is mirrored in the corresponding part of the body.

Reflexology is a wonderfully relaxing complementary therapy, which works on the feet (occasionally it is done on the hands) to help heal the whole person and not just the prevailing symptoms.

How can Reflexology help me?

Reflexology works by relaxing the person by stimulating the parasympathetic nervous system often referred to as the rest & digest system. The parasympathetic nervous system conserves energy as it slows the heart rate, increases intestinal and gland activity, and relaxes the sphincter muscles in the digestive tract, helping increase the absorbtion of nutrients into our body.

It particuarly helps individuals that struggle to sleep well or are feeling rather stressed.

Who is it suitable for?

Reflexology is so safe that it is suitable for children, pregnant women, women that are trying for a baby, older people. In fact it is suitable for almost anyone regardless of age or health condition. It is the most frequently used complementary therapy whilst individuals are undergoing Chemotherapy treatment.

Reflexology can be used to help restore and maintain the body's natural equilbrium. This gentle therapy encourages the body to work naturally to restore its own healthy balance.

Reflexology has been shown to be effective for:

  • Back Pain
  • Migraine
  • Fertility
  • Arthritis
  • Sleep disorders
  • Sports Injuries
  • Hormonal imbalances
  • Digestive disorders
  • Stress related conditions

Many people find Reflexology to be a truly relaxing treatment, that helps to bring calm to the mind and brings the body into balance. It can aid sleep, help eliminate toxins from the body, relieve lower back pain and help regulate the menstrual cycle.

I hold a Practitioner's Diploma in Reflexology from the Lancashire holistic college in Preston (2001). Since my original training, I have completed further professional development days on Vertical Reflex Therapy and other relevant subjects.
